Burmantofts Community Projects (BCP) is seeking committed and values-driven Trustees to join our Board and support the charity to reduce poverty, improve financial wellbeing, and strengthen resilience across some of the most disadvantaged communities in Leeds and surrounding areas.
Trustees play a vital role in ensuring the effective governance, strategic oversight, and long-term sustainability of the charity. Working collectively, Trustees support the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team to deliver BCP’s mission while ensuring the charity operates legally, ethically and in line with best practice.
Principal Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
– Contribute to the strategic direction of the charity, ensuring decisions maximise positive impact for the communities BCP serves.
– Ensure that the charity’s mission, values and long-term strategy remain at the heart of Board discussions and decisions.
– Fulfil duties under charity law, acting in the best interests of BCP at all times.
– Support fellow Trustees to identify and manage strategic risks, and to consider opportunities for sustainable growth.
– Maintain appropriate oversight of financial performance, long-term sustainability, and use of resources.
Governance
– Uphold the highest standards of charity governance, ensuring BCP complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
– Engage in continuous learning and development to maintain strong governance skills and knowledge.
– Contribute to constructive, respectful discussions within the Board and help resolve issues collaboratively.
– Participate in annual Board and individual performance reviews.
– Support the recruitment of Trustees with the skills, diversity and lived experience required to govern effectively.
External Relations
– Act as a positive ambassador for BCP, helping strengthen our reputation and relationships locally and regionally.
– Where appropriate, represent the charity at external meetings, events or community forums.
– Help build partnerships and networks that support BCP’s mission and strategic priorities.
Efficiency and Effectiveness
– Prepare for and actively participate in Board meetings, contributing constructively to evidence-based, well-reasoned decisions.
– Work collaboratively with fellow Trustees to ensure the Board operates as a cohesive and high-performing team.
– Support the development of clear policies, strategic plans, and reporting frameworks.
– Monitor progress against Board decisions and ensure agreed actions are followed through.
Relationship with the Chief Executive
– Support the Chief Executive by providing insight, challenge and advice within appropriate governance boundaries.
– Maintain an open, professional and respectful relationship that reflects the Trustee role.
– Stay informed about BCP’s activities, services, and performance, offering guidance where appropriate.
